What are crowns?Crowns, also known as caps, are used to "correct" damaged or discoloured teeth, protect or strengthen weakened teeth, or to restore a disfigured tooth to its original shape.Unlike a veneer, a crown covers an entire tooth, starting at the gum line. A crown is usually made of gold, porcelain, or a combination of both. What is involved?Crowning often takes place under anaesthetic. Because a crown is about two millimeters thick, we first shave this amount off of the existing tooth to avoid awkward-looking, oversized teeth. The tooth is then re-shaped into a form upon which a cap can easily sit. The crown is created in our laboratory based on a replica mold of the actual tooth.Approximately two weeks later the crown is ready to be affixed and, once we're satisfied with the "look and feel" of the crown, it's cemented over the original tooth. How long do dental crowns last?Crowns have a life expectancy of ten years when taken care of and can dramatically change your smile and help improve your self-confidence as well as improve a variety of cosmetic dental problems.I'd like to know more.
