What are dental implants?

Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth with natural-looking, natural-feeling artificial teeth. There are a variety of implants to choose from depending on your needs.

What is involved?

Root form implants which are closest in shape to the natural tooth are inserted directly into incisions in the bone, and the bone and gums grow around the root form in about six weeks.

Bone grafting is used when the jawbone is too narrow for root form implants. The missing bone is filled in either with the patient's own bone, or the bone of a human donor, animal bone or synthetic materials that mimics natural bone.

Plate form implants are used when the jaw is too narrow for either root form implants or bone grafting. In this instance the plate form is implanted into the jawbone and the gums are stitched around the implant.

Subperiosteal implants are used in cases of advanced jawbone deterioration. These implants sit under the gums, but on top of the jawbone.

All of the implants require a healing period. The length of this depends on the type of implants. After the healing period, a surgical dentist inserts the final replacement teeth.

How long will dental implants last?

While adjustments may occasionally be required, dental implants themselves should last indefinitely with proper care. Improper brushing and flossing, irregular dental visits, and excessive sugar and starch intake can all bring untimely damage to your implants.
